Kamiel Maase

Sport science, data and the 'Sports Data Valley'

Former distance runner Kamiel Maase (three-time Olympian) currently manages the Sport Science & Innovation program at the Netherlands Olympic Committee (NOC*NSF). This program covers a wide range of activities, including topics like nutrition, aerodynamics, genetics, organizing fieldlabs and recruiting applied performance scientists. Although not a data expert, Kamiel realizes there are many opportunities for improving performance (his main goal) in better organizing and analyzing data. In his presentation, Kamiel will touch upon the types of data gathered in sports as well as introduce the concept of the Sports Data Valley (SDV). With respect to the latter, he would like to ask the audience to help him and his colleagues in getting this SDV realized. More about Maase. More about Sport Science & Innovation.

Arno Knobbe

Monitoring and Analysing Professional Speed Skaters

Dr. Arno Knobbe analyses data from elite speed skaters of the LottoNL-Jumbo team, in order to work out optimal training routines. Based on 15 years of historical data collected by coach Jac Orie, a lot can be said about the response of the trained body to various types of exercises, both for the average skater, as well as for the specific physiology of the individual skater. Knobbe works for the Amsterdam University of Applied Science (HvA) and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, Universiteit Leiden. He works as group leader and data scientist on various analytics-related topics, both theoretical and applied. In a recent project, funded by COMMIT/ and NWO.  More

  • User Inspired Design/Research - Marco van Hout & Geleyn Meijer
“Today, integration, rather than raw technology, has become the pressing problem of our world. This is what designers, above all else, are good at.” (Belinda Lanks - Fast Company)
In an ever more complex world where the development of technology increases and more ideas and solutions are being generated than ever before, it has become harder to integrate this technology in the (dynamic) lives of people. More and more attention is being paid to the user and the importance of human-centered innovation is highlighted, but at the same time, time pressure is increasing to keep up with the speed of tech development. Despite the tension between time and attention, there are many opportunities to build on the ideas and solutions that have been generated by others. Nevertheless, there is not a real culture of sharing, referring and building upon each other’s work in the design field or other fields when it comes to user-centered research.
In this short workshop we will explain and debate the why, how and what of this discussion. We will look at chances for new technologies to be better integrated in people’s lives and participants will experience the power of sharing and building on each other’s work through a case study, and by ‘speaking the common language of methods’.
