Dr. Willem Robert van Hage (PhD TNO / VU University Amsterdam, 2009) is Chief Data Scientist at SynerScope B.V. and guest researcher at the VU University Amsterdam in the field of interdisciplinary e-Science and Data Science. His main research topics in the past 10 years are augmented sense making, visual analytics, information integration, and semantics. In COMMIT he participates in the Data2Semantics and Metis projects and the valorisation project DataLab. He is principal investigator in the US ONRG funded SAGAN and COMBINE projects and work package leader in the EU FP7 project NewsReader, all dealing with knowledge extraction and interactive Linked Data visualization. He is a co-organizer of the LISC and DeRiVE workshop series and the Linked Science Tutorial series about improving the speed, efficiency and transparency of Web research. He has developed the Simple Event Model (SEM), an OWL ontology for the description of event data; spatiotemporal indexing for SWI-Prolog (awarded with a best paper award at the EKAW 2010 conference), and the SPARQL package for the R statistical programming language. Currently he works on interactive large scale network and text analytics.
