SenSafety on the European Data Forum

The COMMIT/project SenSafety will show and demonstrate three major results during the European Data Forum (EDF) on June 29 and 30. SenSafety is about safety in public spaces, and gathers information and tries to "understand" a situation. It uses this information to support and inform the general public and first responders. Information gathering is done by a heterogeneous set of sensor networks: sensors in the infrastructure, wired and wireless sensor networks and mobile phones. The inclusion of mobile phones enhances the information collected by other sensors significantly and offers the opportunity to collect information in places normally not covered by other sensors.

COMMIT/researchers Okan Türkes, Hans Scholten, Paul Havinga, Wouter van Kleunen and Fatjon Seraj will present the following demos:

  • Localisation & tracking: A demonstration of the indoor tracking and localization system that can be used to track objects, persons and crowds in large environments such as an airport.
  • Cocoon: A demonstration of the COCOON opportunistic network that can establish an extremely lightweight communication infrastructure between mobile phones without the need of an infrastructure. This network can be used to disseminate short messages like alarms and road conditions.
  • Road monitoring: An application that uses the sensors of clouds of smartphones to determine the quality and safety of roads for cars, bikes, and wheelchairs.

The European Data Forum 2016 will take place in the Evoluon in Eindhoven. This years theme is: Scaling up the European data economy. EDF is one of the key European events for industry professionals, researchers, policy makers, and members of community initiatives to discuss the challenges and opportunities of data-driven innovation in Europe. The Forum will address all facets of data-driven innovation: infrastructure, tools, applications (including, new products and services reaching out to multilingual European audiences) as well as societal and economic impact.
